Nictate: Soderbergh on cinema's worth
Excerpted from IndieWire’s coverage of Soderbergh’s “state of cinema” talk at the San Francisco International Film Festival 2013:
“[Soderbergh] admitted to having struggled with the thought of film, and art in general, being wasteful in a world where there is real suffering going on, asking…
“Teachers of Literature are apt to think up such problems as ‘What is the author’s purpose’ or still worse ‘What is the guy trying to say?’”
-Vladimir Nabokov
Making a low-budget indie feature means you spend more time with legal documents in your hands than you do with a script.
Maybe I’m naive and this is the case for any budget. If so, don’t tell me.
“I passionately hate the idea of being with it, I think an artist has always to be out of step with his time.”
–Orson Welles
“I’m trying to reach towards a picture that’s totally emotional, not narrative or intellectual, where an audience walks out and they can’t say anything about it except what they feel.”
–Robert Altman
